Shipwrecks have punctuated the history of the California Coast from the earliest explorations up until our present time. This book presents the story of the grounding of the submarine H3 followed by the loss of the U.S. Navy cruiser Milwaukee in December 1916 and January 1917. Millions of dollars in government property were lost, but there were the “bright lights of hope in the darkness - U.S. Coast Guard bravery and expertise, the fearlessness of the lumbermen, fishermen, and other volunteers, the ingenuity of local industrialists and the overall good fortune that more did not lose their lives.”
