Newspaper organization

Volunteer work days with Humboldt newspapers

During our most recent push last June we completed the remaining work sorting, separating, cataloging, boxing, and palletizing all of the various materials.

On Sunday (3/17) we are having a workday from 10 to 6 at the Timber Heritage Association (THA) shops, 930 Vance Avenue, Samoa.  The purpose of the work is to organize all of the duplicate materials for the first of several free newspaper giveaways we are holding beginning on Saturday March 23rd.

During the newspaper giveaway event the public is invited to come and peruse the newspapers materials which will be organized and grouped by year & month.  There are both unbound and bound volumes of the duplicates and both formats will be made available for the public to take away during the event.  Newspapers will be available to be taken on a first come/first served basis and we are planning to hold newspaper giveaway events on the following dates:

Saturday March 23rd
Saturday March 30th
Sunday April 7th

In addition to assembling the materials for the public to take home, we will also curate some of the papers into exhibits showcasing major local stories and events during the past several decades. There is lots of room for creativity and no right or wrong answers.  Imagine this as a sort of interactive pop-up living history exhibit!

It is my hope to see many of your faces this Sunday (3/17) out in Samoa.  Given the magnitude of what we have accomplished together thus far, this next part will be a breeze, and even stands to be pretty fun!

Even if you can't make it out this weekend, please help spread the word.  We're excited about the possibilities and hope to get as many hands on these materials as possible!

Lastly, please know that the Humboldt County Historical Society thanks you for all of your hard work and dedication to this effort - without it, none of this would be possible.
