Redwood Country . . Legacy of the Pioneer USED
A long standing staple in Humboldt history books has been the Redwood series by noted local historian Andrew Genzoli. The first in the series appeared on 1961, and the sixth which came out in 1973 just arrived at the Historical Society Bookstore's used book section. Mostly the books are composed of newspaper columns that Genzoli wrote plus a variety of other sources including many first person accounts and short early newspaper articles.
Book number six is titled Redwood Country: Legacy of the Pioneer. It compiles interesting snippets of history from 1850 to 1941. Subjects cover early "discoveries" and the founding of settlements to notorious crimes, confrontations with the native inhabitants and lives of early settlers. There are stories about early stores, ship wrecks, ship races and important buildings such as the Ingomar Theater. There is also a longer segment about many aspects of "The Life and Times of the Occidental Mill".
Many of the segments give us an enjoyable view of the colorful characters and gripping events in our community's past. The black and white vintage photographs add another welcome dimension. At the Historical Society, we are very glad that after a half century this book is again available to readers who want to affordably dip into tales of our past.
Thanks are due to this donor and to others who gave books from their shelves to ours -- sometimes hard to find books that enlighten so many aspects of local history. And we urge other history enthusiasts to do the same -- making the knowledge and enjoyment of history available to all.
