The cover is a tribute to the two “road trip” articles in this issue. Six months ago when this issue was planned, a road trip sounded like a perfect diversion for summer. Right now, in the middle of “stay at home” it is a fantasy trip. Join our two road trip travelers, one braving travel through the wilds of 1909 northern California in a new motorized contraption, a car, while our other traveler uses a more conventional mode of transportation, a horse, to explore the Bald Hills of northern Humboldt in the mid-1870s. Pictured on the cover is a traveler in a 1908 Maxwell identified by board member Chuck Petty. The image is courtesy of HCHS President Steve Lazar’s extensive postcard collection. The photo for the postcard was taken by Jesse Meiser who lived in Humboldt county between 1905 and 1910.
