Fire in the Mountain: Beginning of the End for NWPRR with Sean Mitchell

  • Redway School 344 Humboldt Avenue Redway, CA, 95560 United States (map)

North Coast railroad history expert, Eureka High School history teacher, and Timber Heritage Association board member Sean Mitchell will present the first program in the Humboldt County Historical Society's new Southern Humboldt Series.

In this presentation, Mitchell expands on his (award winning) 2014 Humboldt Historian piece, describing the demise of the Northwestern Pacific Railroad and identifying three primary events critical to the end of NWPRR: The Christmas Flood of 1964, the 1978 Island Mountain Tunnel Fire, and the four-year run of stormy winters between 1994 and '98.
