Eastward Across Southern Humboldt with Jerry Rohde

Historian and author Jerry Rohde presents the second program of the Humboldt County Historical Society’s new Southern Humboldt series, on Saturday, June 8th at 1:00 p.m. at the Redway Elementary School Multipurpose Room at 344 Humboldt Avenue in Redway. Admission is free, and everyone is invited!

In the late 19th century a string of communities stretched through southern Humboldt County, connecting Shelter Cove on the coast with ranches in the Island Mountain area in southwestern Trinity County. Pack trains of 50 or more mules trudged across the trails, bringing in supplies and taking out wool and other products from the area’s ranches and woodlands.

Learn about the numerous Indian groups that occupied the area, the tanbark craze that removed an entire forest of valuable trees, and the heroes and villains that provided local color.

Fire in the Mountain: Beginning of the End for NWPRR with Sean Mitchell

In this presentation, Mitchell expands on his (award winning) 2014 Humboldt Historian piece, describing the demise of the Northwestern Pacific Railroad and identifying three primary events critical to the end of NWPRR: The Christmas Flood of 1964, the 1978 Island Mountain Tunnel Fire, and the four-year run of stormy winters between 1994 and '98.
