The Friendship of Bodega y Quadra and Vancouver with Pattie Fleschner

Trinidad Museum president Patti Fleschner transports us to the 18th century to witness the unlikely friendship of rival explorers of the Pacific Northwest, Francisco de la Bodega y Quadra of Spain and George Vancouver of England. It was Bodega y Quadra, with Bruno Heceta, who had sailed into Trinidad Bay in 1775, naming and claiming Trinidad in the name of Spanish king Carlos III.

"It was inevitable that Spain and England would clash at some point," says Patti Flechner. "And that point turned out to be Nootka (Vancouver Island). Bodega y Quadra and George Vancouver were sent by their respective courts to settle the territorial dispute in Nootka. Patti Fleschner will illuminate how these two diplomat-navigators averted international violence.
