Available Position - Editor of the Humboldt Historian
The Humboldt Historian is the primary public face of the Humboldt County Historical Society. This quarterly magazine is sold in local bookstores and sent to members four times per year. Local historians and HCHS members regularly contribute fascinating stories detailing aspects of the history of this Northern California region. The quality of the magazine has consistently improved throughout it’s decades of publication.
The Humboldt Historian Editor is a part time employee of the Humboldt County Historical Society Board of Directors. The salary for this position is $18-20,000 annually, depending upon experience.
The Humboldt Historian Editor is primarily responsible for planning each issue of the magazine. This responsibility includes obtaining and creating content, editing articles and working closely with authors to prepare submissions for publication, obtaining photographs and other images from contributors, obtaining and preparing photo caption information and author biographies for first time contributors, and editing letters to the Editor and obituaries as needed. The Editor consistently creates content for the On the Cover, Editor’s Note, and Announcement sections of each issue. The Editor keeps an eye out for good articles and cover images.
Additional Editor Duties
The Humboldt Historian Editor is also responsible for soliciting stories when needed, and for publishing four issues of the Humboldt Historian each year in a timely manner. Other additional duties may include providing publicity content for monthly HCHS library programs and other special events.
Applicants must demonstrate previous experience with editing periodical content and meeting deadlines. Applicants must also demonstrate strong writing abilities, including solid essay and narrative writing skills.
Preferred Additional Qualifications
- Experience with layout and design
- Experience using InDesign or similar design programs to create “camera ready” issue proofs for Times Printing
- Knowledge of Photoshop or similar photo editing software
- Interest in and knowledge of Humboldt County history
