Biography Files by Marilyn Milota

Immigration Records

City Directories

There are 74 of them on the self in the Research Room ranging in dates for 1884-1885 through 2003. Not every year is in the collection. Most of them were published by Polk, but a few were done by other companies. None were published in 1918, 1919, 1931, 1944, 1945 or 1951.

The two earliest ones, 1884-1885 and 1885-1886, cover nine counties. Besides Humboldt, they list the businesses and workers of Marin, Napa, Yolo, Lake, Solano, Mendocino and Sonoma Counties of California. From the 1895-1896 one through the 1950 Directory, the whole of Humboldt County was covered. Beginning with the 1952-53 book, only the communities of Eureka, Arcata, Fortuna, Samoa and Scotia were included. That changed to Eureka, Arcata, Fortuna and McKinleyville in 1970. Eureka alone is listed from 1991 on.

Great Registers

The Society has copies of the Great Registers from 1865, 1871, 1873, 1888, 1890, 1892, 1894, 1896.
