Here at the Humboldt County Historical Society, we get quite a few people like yourself who are engaged in a quest to find traces of the lives of their ancestors. We're pleased that you consider us a potential source of information.

We do not have:

• Newspapers on Microfilm
• Deeds
• Divorce Records

Rarely do we have family photographs that will fill your need. Tracing other descendants of your ancestor would probably be a better bet for visual images of individuals. We do have photos of school and church groups and of structures and scenes around Humboldt County.

We can offer you information about the geographical area in Humboldt County where your ancestor lived and help you develop an image of what life was like here then. We have access to many stories about the whole range of history in our county.

• Current deeds.

County Clerk's Office. Room 235. M-F 8:30-12 and 1-4. 445-7455.

• Wills. For wills, it is best to go in knowing the date of death or probate.
• Criminal and Civil Actions. For divorce decrees, know the date of the action.

Allow yourself and those who help you in this office plenty of time: only one microfilm machine is available to ascertain case numbers. Records are filed by case number and within that alphabetically by last name of the individual.

• Birth records up to 1915.
• Death and Marriage records to present.

Throughout most of the last century the death and birth records are simply a journal entry; from 1905 on the records are more complete. Know name and date of birth if possible. Information on death certificates might include date of birth.
