This is the story of life in the CDF fire crews of the 1950's. It is less about the fires handled by the Weott crew than about the people and the workings of the summer fire camp. It has the rough charm of less regulated days, long since gone, in favor of safety in an unsafe job. Dekker also leads us through his coming of age from an under-aged employee to a college graduate who had to decide whether academics or forest service would be his career.
