A Card for All Seasons: The History of General Hospital, 1906-2000 General Hospital was founded in 1906 by labor leaders in Humboldt County and was known as the Union Labor Hospital, Claasen wrote in the volume's introduction. It had one of the first pre-paid health care plans in the nation. As well as descriptions of the Union Labor Party, the 94-page book includes several photos of the hospital and staff over the years. Also included are transcripts of interviews with long-time Eureka physician Dr. Ted Loring and retired nurse Edna "Penny" Penfold who worked at General Hospital from 1953 to 1978. |
